Yes, it does matter that Michael Cooper is at an institute of higher learning, that he is a coach, educator and role model to his players and the University at large, and that he is to lead the way in graciousness, sportsmanship and class for the University he represents. This was not some “trash talking” that he did in a private arena; say in his practice or in a hallway or among friends. This was in a very public arena, a press conference, one of the ways to help publicize the sport of women’s basketball. They were the first words out of his mouth! Unacceptable. Is this the type of attitude we want to teach any player, male or female? In these days where you have parents getting in physical altercations with opposing players’ parents and coaches and even officials (witness the case of the hockey coach who confronted a referee after a game and knocked him to the ground, only to have the ref hit his head on the ice and die), we need some civility, grace, and sportsmanship in our sports, and we need the leaders to be the coaches at colleges and universities, including a high profile one like USC and Michael Cooper. And I am sorry, if you say this is the most exciting thing that has happened in women’s college basketball, then you are not a true fan that has been to a live game, because we are constantly out of our seats, pumping our fists about 10 times a game because of the exciting things we see women do. Normally I love the insightfulness of your blog and your awareness of issues concerning women’s sports, but I think you missed the mark on this.

No special permission here. I haven't(surprisingly) received any hate mail from the WNBA yet - so far so good. I'm pretty sure a fellow blogger live blogged a Mystics game this season so I'm guessing its okay. Bummer that you couldn't do it in Sacramento. Where you at the game? I'm sure it would have been entertaining, especially when the "Live Access" feed the WNBA is trying so hard to protect goes haywire.

Hey, WSN, Is the WNBA okay with you blogging live? We tried to blog live at a Sacramento Monarchs game and were told we couldn’t, copy right issues, etc. wanting to protect the “Live Acess” thing they got going on. Just wanted to know if you got special permission?

I would describe the first paragraph as "disgusting," not "unsettling." She is supposed to be the next MJ, but the second sentence gives her bra cup size? Does anyone know MJ's, or Cal Ripken, Jr.'s jock strap size? No? Let's keep it that way, and have the same respect for female athletes as well.

The idea of having book club is fantastic--informative and interesting--I agree that some of the ideas of the authors in trying to obtain desegregation in sports are unrealistic, such as, men and women playing the same sports. However, stressing the fact that women and men should have equal air and promotion time is important.

Great--I particularly liked the video--highpoints of the game in which US was defeated by Japan. Maybe if Jenny Finch was the pitcher we may have won--though Monica Abbot and Cat Osterman tried their best. Where was America's offense? That's why we need to keep the sport in the Olympics so that we can avenge our loss.
